If you do have small end tables that are open you may want to consider adding a contrasting linen or lace piece to the top and even have it extend over and down the sides some. This will give your table a bit more bulk without taking up added space. For really small homes you can eliminate one of the end tables entirely. While it`s nice to have end tables on both ends for convenience and balance there is no hard and fast rule requiring this. You may be able to make due with a single table and perhaps add a floor lamp on the other side to add light and even things out visually.
Choosing coffee tables and end tables is not a priority with most people when they begin to furnish their homes and even more mature homeowners often look upon these as extras requiring little thought. Chairside Tables: End tables can be used as chairside tables of course. The only difference is the chairside table often has a smaller footprint and is sized to place next to a recliner or chair. The different sized tables tuck under one another when not in use and pull out as needed to add more table space when you have guests over.
