Chairside Tables: End tables can be used as chairside tables of course. The only difference is the chairside table often has a smaller footprint and is sized to place next to a recliner or chair. Smaller end tables can do the same thing offering you flexibility in your room designs. Nesting tables: If you entertain frequently nesting tables make great end tables as well. The different sized tables tuck under one another when not in use and pull out as needed to add more table space when you have guests over.
For example you can get coffee and end table sets that are long on storage as well as style. Many coffee tables come with storage space inside accessible either by doors or through a lift top table that cantilevers up and out from the coffee table itself. The same is true of end tables. Some have shelves others have a single drawer while still others have several drawers allowing you to keep things out of sight and out of mind when not in use. These are perfect for families or people who have pets. When company comes over just store all the toys in the drawers and doored units of your coffee and end table sets.
If you do have small end tables that are open you may want to consider adding a contrasting linen or lace piece to the top and even have it extend over and down the sides some. This will give your table a bit more bulk without taking up added space. For really small homes you can eliminate one of the end tables entirely. While it`s nice to have end tables on both ends for convenience and balance there is no hard and fast rule requiring this. You may be able to make due with a single table and perhaps add a floor lamp on the other side to add light and even things out visually.
Another thing to factor in is the visual weight. If you purchase metal and glass tables for example they will not carry the same weight as a wood table. As such you can go with something that`s a bit larger or which makes a bigger statement. It will have the same impact on the room as a smaller wood table. If it has extensive use of glass such as having top and bottom shelves that are glass you can scale up even a bit more.
