First why do you need coffee tables and end tables - or either one of these? Many use them simply for show and rarely for coffee. Others use them only when they have guests while yet others actually use them in the course of a normal day for their primary intended use.
If you do have small end tables that are open you may want to consider adding a contrasting linen or lace piece to the top and even have it extend over and down the sides some. This will give your table a bit more bulk without taking up added space. For really small homes you can eliminate one of the end tables entirely. While it`s nice to have end tables on both ends for convenience and balance there is no hard and fast rule requiring this. You may be able to make due with a single table and perhaps add a floor lamp on the other side to add light and even things out visually.
However if you have a translucent top instead of a clear one you need to consider going with something a bit smaller in the same general neighborhood as a traditional wood end table. When selecting end tables of metal be sure you shop with a reputable seller who handles quality products. There may be a reason why you to such a good deal on a metal table. The metal welds may be inferior the fit may not be good between the different pieces and the materials themselves may not be high quality causing the finish to flake off within months of your purchase. As with any piece of furniture end tables are a major investment and you want to make sure that you are getting top quality for the budget you have available. You certainly don`t want to fall in love with a set of end tables that are the perfect fit for your room only to have them fall apart on you.
Coffee tables and end tables should also meet the purpose you have intended for them. In some cases this will be simply as a repository for a coffee cup or drinks glass. For others it might mean holding countless magazines or `coffee table` books. Whatever your purpose is your occasional tables should meet your needs while also matching the rest of the furniture in the room - or by contrasting with it by design.
